Eden Byker

The Eden team are a group of Christians living in Byker to do life with their neighbours, share the good news of Jesus, and build a deep sense of community. They do this through youth work, community projects, intentionality in relationships with neighbours, and discipleship. We love seeing the work they do in one of the most deprived areas of the country, and we’re so encouraged by the many stories of people from Byker encountering and following Jesus because of the work the Eden team do there.

Student Outreach

Every freshers week St Thomas’ Church hands out thousands of slices of free pizza, along with thousands of invitations to church, to Newcastle and Northumbria university students as a way of saying welcome to the city and Jesus love you. Each year the church sees many students try church, encounter Jesus, and begin following Him - all as a result of this outreach.

Church Planting

As the Resource Church for the Diocese of Newcastle, part of St Thomas’ mission is to plant churches across the North East. This is so that we may see communities flourishing in every area of the region as they follow Jesus together, build strong relationships with one another, and reach out to love the neighbourhood they’ve been called to.

Tommy’s Coffee Cart

A large part of what we do here at Tommy’s Coffee is run a coffee cart in the entrance of the church, where every coffee comes with an invitation to church. Open every week day, it’s a joy to serve the workers, students and visitors of Newcastle with great coffee and baked goods, along with meaningful conversations and invitations to explore who Jesus is. There are already a number of people we’ve met who initially came in just for a coffee, but after conversation and prayer left having put their trust in Jesus!

Youth & Children’s Groups

Every week St Thomas’ runs a variety of groups for children and young people, including youth clubs, bible studies, toddler groups, residential trips and more. All of these aim to help young people encounter Jesus, build relationships with their peers, and equip them to live as life-long disciples of Jesus.

Safe Families & Home For Good

Safe Families & Home For Good is a charity that believes no one should feel alone. They exist to create relationship and connection because everyone deserves to belong. They offer hope, belonging and support to children, families and care leavers; they do this primarily, but not exclusively, with and through local churches.

In 2025 we opened the Tommy’s Coffee Cart on the morning of the Great North Run and donated all proceeds to Safe Families & Home For Good. Alongside this, three members of the Tommy’s team ran the Great North Run in support of Safe Families & Home For Good. As a result, we raised over £1000 to support the amazing work this charity does.
